Jason Leonard's visit (and his friend from the British Lions) |
|

There was a very good turn out of Mini and Junior players for the Sunday's visit of legendary former England prop forward Jason Leonard. The visit marked the start of the RBS Six Nations Roadshow, Jason is the celebrity at the front of the promotion and Keswick RFC was chosen by RBS and the RFU to be the launchpad.
Two nights hard frost put paid to the scheduled matches so Keswick improvised alternative training based on extremely sketchy information. When four separate training sessions commenced for Under-10, under-12s, under 14s and Under -17s at 10-30am, there was a request for the players to stick around for longer than usual and preserve a bit of energy and enthusiasm for Jason's arrival sometime later.
Once the media-event organizers became aware of the need to establish and maintain a relationship with those responsible for the coaching of the Keswick players the event ran as smoothly as any improvised operation can. Once the timetable became clear the players were informed and sessions were modified accordingly. Thanks to the use of appropriately timed breaks, and varied activity, even the very young players were able to maintain stamina and the four hour attention span required. There is no doubt that the glorious sunny weather helped this process, as did the superb condition of the Davidson Park pitches. Above all the happy atmosphere was inspired by the contribution of Keswick Coaches Andy Partington, Kay and Paul Clarke, Howard Winter, Gary Metcalfe, Iain MacPherson, Phil Harrison, Peter Robinson, and Alan Weightman whose dedicated attitude and skill preserved attention and concentration and inspired a wonderful final presentation. This was presided over by Jason Leonard himself who arrived bang on time at 2-00 pm. Mercifully the official pleasantries were kept to a minimum and Jason was soon mixing amongst the players.

Jason Leonard to visit Keswick |
Most capped England player

On Sunday 31st January, Jason Leonard.....
who won 114 caps for England and 5 caps for the British & Irish Lions will be spending the day a Keswick Rugby Club. The event will feature during this years 6 Nations matches which begin in February. Keswick was chosen to receive special assistance through this launch event by the RBS RugbyForce panel in recognition of the club’s fighting spirit, shown over the past five years after suffering from severe flooding in 2005 and 2009. The RBS RugbyForce panel and the RFU further identified Keswick RUFC as a club that showed strong willingness to overcome adversity. On Sunday, RBS RugbyForce will bring together club players, members and volunteers from the local area to carry out work at the club. Improvements will mainly focus on clearance work following the recent floods, various painting jobs and generally giving the club a spring clean.

League Reorganisation - 18 January
A meeting held at Penrith on Monday evening discussed the matter of possible RFU League reorganization. All but one of the Cumbrian Clubs were represented and a wide variety of views were expressed. There were three options on offer. The first was for no change, the second was for some change including the introduction of A Cumbrian/ North Lancashire Division 2 and the third, more radical by far, was for Cumbria to stand alone and have a three tier system containing only Cumbrian Clubs. The meeting recognized the need to maintain the status quo and retain the current system. This decision was unsurprising and a relief to those clubs like Keswick who enjoy RFU Level 7 status, and above and are members of the Cumbrian North Lancashire Division, and North West or North East One.

County council proves itself prop-ular with Keswick rugby club deal - 8 December
“Keswick rugby club has just one ambition – to have the best possible rugby facilities at Davidson Park. Our commitment, tenacity and determination as a club has been proved in recent days, when our club house was up and running again and open for business just seven days after the floods hit and left the club house five feet under water. I’d like to thank the county council in helping us take this important step forward.”
David Etherden, special projects co-ordinator of Keswick RFU, said: “I’ve been very impressed with how committed this club is and how much it brings to the local community in Keswick and surrounding areas. The club has a firm financial footing, is clearly prospering and has big plans to improve the quality of the pitches. It’s right that they should press ahead with the plans safe in the knowledge that they own the freehold to their pitches.”
