At Under 18 level Cumbria played Northumberland this Sunday and although they lost 38-17 the game was memorable from a Keswick perspective as 5 Keswick players were in the squad -
Ben Ashcroft, Mike Tait, Josh Terry, Ben Farrrell and Mark Ireland
Well done lads – especially as some are still U17’s ! We are looking forward to these lads starting to turn our for the senior club later this year

CUP – Keswick 10 Wigton 0 – yes we beat Wigton ! – no one can remember the last time
Superb, superb play by the whole team tries from Tim Kemmit & Jamie McKenzie – 40 minutes of solid defending without giving an inch – the whole team in the second half – my men of the match – David “swede” Ray in the forwards and Brian Storey for his superb job of closing out Wigtons back line
In the meantime on the Grove pitch the 2nds beat Whitehaven 31-13
another great game with lots and lots of players wanting to get on – a very impressive return for Ian Dunn who looked very sharp
The Under 16’s played Long Benton who are on tour from Northants and lost a tight game 17-3 in atrocious conditions

The Under 18 traveled to Darlington Mowden Park for a fixture in the tri county u18 league
Keswick won 46-0 – very impressive against a big Mowden park team – but one that couldnt live with the Keswick backs and couldnt penetrate the keswick forwards
Oddly despite not having Robert Miller (England U18 fly half) who plays for Keswick School but Aspatria Club – Keswick Club side is probably stronger than the school side as players such as Carl Smythe, Josh Terry and Jamie McKenzie who have all left school play for the Club side and they really do make an impact – This U18 Club side is very good and its difficult to spot any weak links – whilst many Club members can spot Farrells, Irelands and Matty Roper they are now spotting the Aaron Thompson, Hinkelys, Taits etc that make this team buzz

Keswick 1st XV logged up another voctory with a 16-3 win against Aspatria at Aspatria
Whilst Aspatrias backs hardly made an attack they were very good defensively and stopped the flowing rugby that Keswick has played the last few week – that left it to the forwards who sonn had the upper hand – but the score board was always going to be slow ticking over and whilst Keswick didnt ever look to be losing the game – winning it was frustratingly hard

Keswick 20 Barnard Castle 27
All the Keswick players deserve our greatest admiration for the way they played and matched Barnard Castle (BC) throughout the game. Keswick forwards more than tamed a much larger BC pack and the backs led by Rob Miller and Matty Roper defended and attacked with 120% effort. The lads are gutted – they know that with one or two less mistakes and one or two better decision in attack they could have won – its always the hardest loss to take when you know you could have won – but it was not down to lack of skill, effort or determination. Ther are porabably two reason for the defeat
1. The mistakes Keswick made were in the most dangerous areas of the pitch whilst BC’s were in “safe” areas
2. The gulf we know exists between State & Public school commitment, funding and time given  to sport – its difficult to compete against a team that trains every day and is playing all their games against the best i.e. the Durham, Sedburghs, Wakefields and Bradfords
I suspect BC will go on into last 16 or last 8 of the competition – so lads remember you played one of the top 10 sides in the country and you matched them !
Keswick U15 were by no means outplayed but they did recieve a rugby lesson from RGS Newcastle. The game was controlled through RGS’s scrum and fly halves who showed superb skills. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the performance was Keswick’s willingness to watch the lone forward rushing into the arms of the waiting RGS forwards rather than providing support – the result turn over with horrible frequency – and the bottom line is you can not score if you dont have the ball.
All that being said the U15’s have improved enormously since the start of the season and there is now a sense that if they can finally blend and support each other they will prove formidable opponents

A sparkling first half led to high expectations of another run away score – however the 2nd half turned into one of the most dreary games as Winderemere set up one rolling maul after another but failed to actually make any headway – luckily the game ended with another sparkling move to see Bunting score from distance
